Thirty-Two

While I waited for Koch and Courthouse Karen to get back to me, I had nowhere to go. I could hide out in the motel but didn’t want to stay in one place for too long. Although I was outright ignoring the warning spray-painted on the windows of Garden City Reads by continuing to investigate, I wanted to lay as low as possible in case I was being watched.

During the murder investigation at Tidal Creek Brewhouse at the beginning of June, I was aware of the security cameras used at Paradise Hideaway. I kicked myself for not thinking about them while I was there, or I would have done a better job of avoiding them in case someone was watching. Slinking around the rear of the condo and peeking over the fence while standing on an upside-down bucket didn’t look suspicious at all. Yes, there was a camera at either end of the building. I’m such an amateur at times.

The thing about me was I learned quickly and rarely made the same mistake three times. Maybe four. Sometimes only twice if I was lucky.

At any other time, Gomez not returning my call or text wouldn’t have been so bothersome. Usually, it meant she was working. This time, she had been placed on leave, and we were in the middle of trying to figure out if her partner had been murdered.

As I cruised up to where Farrow Parkway turned over to Socastee Boulevard after going under the 17 Bypass overpass, it occurred to me that there was one person I could contact about Gomez. He was also the person who might have placed a bug in my phone meaning that he might also be involved in whatever scheme was taking place in Myrtle Beach.

Lucien.

The light turned red at the three-way intersection leading out to a McDonald’s and WBTW television station. I bit the inside of my bottom lip. I didn’t want to do this, but I saw no alternative.

I didn’t have Lucien’s number saved in my phone. I had no reason to, but I had a thought on how to get it. I checked through the emails I’d received this past weekend. Because I was officially part of the Zach Lawson murder investigation, I’d been included on emails to and from Moody and the forensics department. Kevin had been the person who sent most of them, but one time, Lucien responded with a “Thanks.”

His emails had a saved signature that included his contact information under his name. I pulled up that email, held my finger on his number, copied it, and pasted it into the screen to make a call.
